Casa Ybel Kid’s Club Rocks

KidsClub

The Casa Kid’s Club is now featuring very popular theme days from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  Children ages 4 to 11 are welcome.  These mid morning to early afternoon adventures include a kid-friendly lunch.  Theme days include Treasure Island Day, with kiddies wearing pirate hats as they search for buried treasures and Luau Days, with children enjoying limbo and floral leis.  Also extremely popular is “It’s Your Birthday” with participants pretending it is their special day as they decorate their own cupcake surrounded by balloons.  Adding an international flair is Island Fiesta Day featuring pinatas, sombreros and maracas.

Afternoon crafts include perennial favorites of shell mirrors, shark tooth jewelry, tie-dye shirts and beach flip flops, which involve decorating their own sandals.  Recreation Coordinators Paula Daly, Lillie Clark and Erin Albin keep the Kid’s Club a fun place to visit as the children’s parents enjoy a few hours of  total relaxation on their own.

It’s Turtle Time at Casa Ybel!

We on Sanibel Island take a great deal of pride in our work to preserve natural ecosystems and the wildlife that call our island home. One of the best things about this is that each day we have the gift of interacting with nature, whether it be the numerous anoles who share our outdoors, or the bald eagles nesting nearby.

Turtles tracks on the beach

Turtles tracks on the beach

From May 1 through October 31 we celebrate a very special event – Loggerhead Turtle nesting season.  Every year, female turtles return to the same beach they hatched from and lay between 50 and 175 eggs.  During nesting season, Sanibel has a dedicated group of volunteers who help protect these nests.  Since the turtles lay eggs at night, at first light these “protectors” walk the beach and look for the telltale tracks in the sand.  If a nest is discovered, they notify the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) who mark-off the nest and number it, both to keep track of any hatchlings and so the public knows a nest is present and is not to be bothered in any way.

Of course, everyone wants a turtle nest to be near their property, so they can keep an eye on it, and by chance be around to see all those baby turtles hatch and try to make their way to the water’s edge.

We are tremendously excited to announce that Casa Ybel Beach has a turtle’s nest! It was so exciting to discover those big prints in the sand and how she made her way to the perfect spot.
Please share in our joy as we anticipate the excitement of new turtles!

Mosci Brings Manhattan to Sanibel – One Night Only!

mosci_bwSanibel Island, November 3rd, 2010 – With his flair for the pop standards, New York singer and musician, Robert Mosci, will be in town to heat up the house at The Thistle Lodge, Wednesday November 3rd from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Mosci was the resident musician at New York’s Top of the Tower located on the east side in the Beekman Towers Hotel and is now the featured performer at the NYC’s famed Water Club. He is noted not only his vocals but for his command of the piano as well.

Listen to his smooth and mellow voice and his interpretations of some old favorites. Mosci’s voice has been described in much the same way that music aficionado’s described Sinatra’s voice. In fact, his latest CD entitled, Frankly Speaking is a tribute to Sinatra and has been receiving notable radio recognition.
